I have not seen “Dancer in the Dark,” and I never will. Lars VonTrier’s films make me despondent. There is just no other way to put it. I cried off and on for a week after watching “Breaking the Waves.” Everyone says “Dancer in the Dark” is even more bleak, so I am going to opt-out. I enjoyed being moved by films, but I don’t mind being crushed by them.
We watched “Escape from Sobibor” in my 7th grade History class. I have never, ever forgotten it. I remember Alan Arkin & Rutger Hauer both being amazing, and I was completely riveted by the story. Great pick, John, and a wonderful example of a film that moved me without crushing me!

Sorry, that should say, “I don’t like being crushed by them.”
