The podcast officially reaches drinking age with John’s review of the 1998 Roland Emmerich monster fest Godzilla
. Given the shameful tag line for this film of “Size Does Matter” Mike and John tackle Bottom 5 Movie Tag Lines. They also read some of the listener submitted tag lines, play Matinee Deathmatch and recommend some fun Staff Picks.
This episode also features another Love Song From Rider Strong. This time around Rider proves he is clairvoyant by picking a fantastic actor who just days after recording this segment was given the main role in an upcoming blockbuster. Clearly Rider is a “scary judge of talent.”

Yeah, Godzilla REALLY didn’t do it for me either…but then neither did the old ones either.
I’m still in shock over how much this movie brought in!

HAHA!! Yeah you’d think word of mouth would have doomed it. but there really wasn’t anything else for parents to take rowdy kids too that long weekend

Wait a goshdarn minute, Merrigunz — when did it become compulsory that you had seen the movie to mention the taglines? I mean I get it in general — you can’t call a “Bottom 5 Villain” (or golddigger, etc.) without having seen the film. However, part of the point of taglines is you don’t have to see the movie to know it. They’re usually right these on the poster — I didn’t have to see “Clash of the Titans” to know that “Titans will clash” is a terrible tagline…

While in general I would agree that you don’t have to see the movie to be aware, and in some cases assaulted by the bad tag line it is a Filmjitsu Bottom Five rule that in order to be included in a Bottom Five you have to have seen it.

Aah, okay, I didn’t realize that. Then my list that I sent in is definitely invalid, as I haven’t seen many of them (although I do own Crankier, and I did see Deep Blue Sea).

SHOWGIRLS! Oh, John – you have made my day! Can’t wait for Merrigunz to get his Gina Gersh-on. Great pick!!
And, just in case you’re feeling slighted Mr. Mike, I just wanted you to know that “I’m Jason Voorhees and Windows 7 was my idea” made me nearly spit-take my beer. NEARLY, because you know I would never let beer go to waste.
Keep it up, dudes!!!

I attended the Softimage User Group meeting at Siggraph ’98 where Godzilla’s special effect house, Centropolis, was in attendance. They took the stage and apologized to the audience for Godzilla before explaining how shoddy the effects work for the movie actually is, pointing out all the shortcuts they made to cover up how awful the model and animation was. I laughed.
And laughed.
And laughed.

It seems everyone spent a lot of time apologizing for this movie. Except the studio who loves the nearly $400M Gross. Fortunately Legendary Pictures released concept art at Comic-Con of a new Godzilla that looks like the old Godzilla possessed by the devil. Here’s hoping for a rad new movie!
